Port Hamilton
One of Edinburgh’s landmark buildings
Introduction
Some buildings occupy more than physical space.
They shape perceptions, define districts, and become symbols of economic confidence.
Situated on Morrison Street in the heart of Edinburgh’s commercial centre, Port Hamilton is one such building. Overlooking the historic canal basin and occupying a prominent gateway position within the city, the huge complex has long been recognised as one of Scotland’s most significant corporate addresses.
Years ago, ambition extended far beyond development. The project sought to position Port Hamilton as a workplace aligned with the expectations of the times— combining sustainability, wellbeing, flexibility, and architectural excellence.
To help communicate that vision, the development team turned to IDEAS.
Working alongside the developers Bookmount Murray and the wider marketing team, IDEAS was appointed to create the brand identity, marketing strategy, sales materials, and visual communications needed to establish Port Hamilton’s position.
The Challenge
Large commercial developments face a unique communications challenge.
By the time a building is complete, investment decisions, occupier conversations, and market perceptions have often already been formed.
Port Hamilton’s development represented a substantial investment in the future of Edinburgh’s commercial property market. Yet many of the project’s most valuable attributes — sustainability credentials, workplace experience, long-term environmental performance, and future occupier benefits — could not be physically experienced during the early marketing phase.
The challenge was therefore to create belief before completion.
The development required a compelling identity capable of communicating both the scale of the transformation and the quality of the materials, ambience and future experience while differentiating Port Hamilton within an increasingly competitive commercial property market.
Our Intervention
Under the creative direction of Don Jack, IDEAS developed a strategic brand and communications programme designed to position Port Hamilton as one of Edinburgh’s most attractive business destinations.
The objective was not simply to market a building, but to create a distinctive proposition that connected location, heritage, aesthetic, sustainability, and commercial opportunity.
The programme included:
Brand identity development – creating a contemporary visual identity aligned with the building’s ambitions and future positioning.
Strategic market positioning – establishing key messages and differentiators for prospective occupiers and stakeholders.
Marketing collateral – producing high-quality brochures and supporting materials to communicate the development’s credentials.
Marketing suite and exhibition materials – creating immersive presentation tools that allowed audiences to engage with the vision before completion.
Project storytelling – connecting the building’s historic canal-side location with its future role as a sustainable business destination.
Cross-platform communications – ensuring consistency across sales, marketing, stakeholder, and promotional channels.
The result was a coherent and highly professional brand platform capable of supporting the development throughout its marketing lifecycle.
Campaign & Strategy
The communications strategy focused on translating technical and architectural excellence into meaningful commercial value.
Rather than concentrating solely on square footage or specifications, IDEAS positioned Port Hamilton around the experience and opportunities it would provide for future occupiers.
The campaign combined:
Place-led storytelling that celebrated the building’s unique location and relationship with Edinburgh’s historic canal basin.
Future-focused messaging that highlighted sustainability, wellbeing, and workplace transformation.
Premium visual communications designed to reflect the quality and ambition of the redevelopment.
Sales and stakeholder engagement materials that supported leasing conversations and market awareness.
Exhibition and presentation environments that enabled audiences to visualise the completed development long before construction was complete.
The strategy ensured that Port Hamilton entered the marketplace with a strong identity and a compelling narrative capable of supporting both commercial objectives and long-term reputation.

Results & Legacy
Perhaps the most telling measure of success emerged from an unexpected source.
Having witnessed the impact of IDEAS’ work on the Port Hamilton project, both the architectural practice and legal advisers associated with the development subsequently commissioned IDEAS to undertake rebranding and marketing initiatives for their own organisations.
It was an endorsement that spoke volumes.
When the professionals responsible for shaping and advising a major development choose to adopt the same creative approach for their own businesses, it reflects a level of confidence that extends far beyond a single project.
That was then – this is now.
Port Hamilton’s latest planned redevelopment is among one of Edinburgh’s most significant commercial property transformations, supported by a £200 million investment programme and scheduled for completion in 2027.
For IDEAS, this latest project stands as a reminder that successful branding does more than promote buildings.
It helps people recognise value, establishes opportunity, and helps lays the foundation for whatever comes next.
And occasionally, great design proves contagious.
