Bannockburn House

Turning heritage restoration into a movement

Introduction

Historic buildings survive because people believe they matter.

Bannockburn House is one of Scotland’s most significant heritage properties — a place rich in history, personal stories, and national importance. Yet like many historic assets, its future depends not only on preservation but on the ability to engage new audiences, inspire support, and create a shared sense of ownership.

As part of plans to reinstate Bonnie Prince Charlie’s bedroom and restore this important element of Scotland’s Jacobite heritage, Bannockburn House required a campaign capable of reaching beyond traditional heritage audiences.

The opportunity was clear: create a public-facing movement that could connect emotionally with supporters, demonstrate community commitment, and strengthen the case for future funding and partnerships.

To help achieve this, Bannockburn House turned to IDEAS.

Drawing on decades of experience in brand creation, destination marketing, visitor attractions, and audience engagement, IDEAS developed a crowdfunding campaign strategy and brand approach designed to transform a restoration project into a compelling story people wanted to join.

The Challenge

Heritage projects often face a fundamental challenge.

People value history, but they do not always understand how they can personally contribute to protecting it.

The reinstatement of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s bedroom represented a meaningful restoration opportunity, but success depended upon communicating why the project mattered, who it was for, and the tangible difference individual supporters could make.

The campaign needed to:

  • Build trust through transparency and authenticity.
  • Create urgency without compromising credibility.
  • Identify audiences most likely to connect emotionally with the story.
  • Provide a clear and memorable identity across multiple communication channels.
  • Convert interest into active participation and financial support.

The challenge was not simply raising funds.

It was creating belief.

Our Intervention

Under the creative direction of Don Jack, IDEAS developed the foundations for a dedicated crowdfunding brand and audience engagement strategy.

The approach combined heritage storytelling, strategic audience insight, and a flexible visual identity designed to work across every campaign touchpoint.

IDEAS’ role included:

Campaign positioning – defining the core proposition, audience opportunity, and emotional drivers behind the campaign.

Audience strategy – identifying priority supporter groups and understanding their motivations, including the significant global audience connected to Scottish history and the Outlander phenomenon.

Brand creation – developing a distinctive campaign identity capable of creating recognition, trust, and emotional connection.

Messaging framework – establishing headlines, supporting narratives, and calls to action designed to encourage participation.

Cross-media brand planning – ensuring the identity could translate consistently across digital, physical, and experiential environments.

Creative rollout considerations – planning application across social media, advertising, exhibitions, website platforms, press materials, merchandise, printed materials, and supporter communications.

Campaign & Strategy

IDEAS recognised that successful crowdfunding depends on more than asking people to contribute.

It requires giving people a reason to care.

The strategy centred around creating a strong alignment between Bannockburn House’s heritage significance and audiences already emotionally connected to Scotland’s stories.

One such audience opportunity identified was the worldwide community of Outlander fans.

This audience has demonstrated a deep affinity with Scotland’s landscapes, history, Jacobite heritage, and the characters and events that shaped the nation’s past.

The opportunity was to respectfully connect that existing emotional investment with a tangible heritage outcome — transforming admiration for Scotland’s history into active support for preserving it.

The campaign approach focused on:

Compelling storytelling – communicating the human significance behind the restoration.

Transparency and trust – clearly demonstrating goals, timelines, fundraising requirements, and progress.

Emotional engagement – helping supporters feel part of the restoration journey.

Consistent brand expression – ensuring every interaction reinforced the same campaign personality and purpose.

Results & Legacy

The Bannockburn House crowdfunding initiative demonstrated how heritage projects can move beyond traditional fundraising models by creating meaningful public participation.

By establishing a clear campaign identity and communications framework, IDEAS helped define how the restoration story could be presented consistently across multiple platforms — from digital campaigns and social media through to exhibitions, merchandise, press activity, and physical visitor experiences.

The work reinforced a fundamental principle of successful heritage development:

People do not simply fund buildings.

They support stories, identities, and futures they feel connected to.

Through strategic branding, audience understanding, and emotionally engaging storytelling, IDEAS helped position Bannockburn House not merely as a restoration project, but as a shared cultural opportunity.

A place where history is not simply preserved.

It is brought back to life.
