RADICAL WEAVERS

Inclusive · Inspiring · Wholehearted · Agents of Change

“Sincere thanks to Don, Stuart and Annette for an outstanding quality of project—delivered within a very limited budget, well ahead of the planned timescale, and to a standard that the most prestigious museum would be proud of. We would love to work with the team again in future and would recommend IDEAS without reserve.”

Mairi Breslin, Radical Weavers

Introduction

In 1820, Scotland stood at the epicentre of a clash between industrial upheaval and the unyielding pursuit of justice. Amid the noise of the Industrial Revolution, Stirling’s Radical Weavers emerged—not merely as skilled craftsmen, but as community leaders, activists, and early champions of workers’ rights. They fought for fair wages, humane working conditions, and dignity for the ordinary citizen.

Their courage ignited a movement that would echo through generations, forever weaving their story into Scotland’s social and cultural fabric.

More than two centuries later, their spirit lives on—reimagined by a charity carrying their name, their mission, and their conviction that community can transform lives.

The Radical Weavers Charity

The Radical Weavers Charity exists to support young people who face some of the deepest barriers to employment, self-worth, and social participation. Many arrive having disengaged from education and lost any clear route towards a positive future. Isolation follows quickly; confidence falls away; opportunities evaporate.

Radical Weavers intervenes at the most critical moment. Using evidence-based behavioural practice, errorless learning, and a carefully structured creative process, the charity surrounds each individual with a peer community already making progress. Inside the weaving studio, young people are invited to rediscover purpose through craft, collaboration, and the small victories of making something extraordinary from almost nothing.

Through creative exploration, celebration of completed work, and sustained emotional support, young people begin to believe—not abstractly, but truly—that they matter, they belong, and they have a meaningful contribution to make.

The Radical Weavers Charity doesn’t simply help people find work.
It helps them find themselves.

The Journey

Stirling once stood at the forefront of global tartan and textile production. With modern infrastructure, celebrated cultural assets, and panoramic landscapes linking the city to the countryside, it is uniquely placed to reclaim its place as Scotland’s beating heart of weaving heritage.

The Radical Weavers Experience builds on this provenance, extending the legacy of the V&A Dundee’s global Tartan Exhibition. Through immersive spaces, hands-on encounters, and exhibitions that explore tartan’s rise, fall, and resurgence, Stirling becomes not just a host—but a home for innovation, storytelling, and community renewal.

The project aims to connect visitors with Scotland’s radical past while igniting fresh pride in its creative future.

The Challenge

An Enduring Legacy to Honour

Iconic weaving patterns withstand centuries because they hold meaning—linking generations, cultures, and identities. Radical Weavers sought to reflect this timelessness, transforming heritage into an engine for social change.

A Sanctuary for Growth

At its deepest level, the charity serves as a sanctuary: a place where safety, purpose, and belonging are woven into the everyday. Rooted in a proven model of care, Radical Weavers needed an exhibition that could articulate its mission, celebrate its heritage, and inspire the wider world.

A Metaphor Made Real

Weaving is the perfect metaphor.
Every strand counts.
Every thread matters.
Individually fragile, together they become something strong, beautiful, and useful.

The charity operates on the same principle: find each person’s unique strengths, address their challenges with compassion and practicality, and help them leave with pride, capability, and direction.

A Better Place to Live, Work and Visit

The ambition extended beyond a single exhibition. This was a city-wide cultural opportunity: to celebrate Stirling’s weaving history, attract visitors, strengthen community identity, fuel regeneration, and share the Radical Rising story with the world.

Between Past and Present

The Radical Rising remains one of Scotland’s most significant yet under-told stories. The new Radical Weavers project bridges this historical gap—making activism, community resilience, and social justice feel urgent, human, and contemporary.

Bold, immersive, and uncompromising, the exhibition invites visitors not only to learn but to feel: the hardship, the resolve, and the unbroken thread connecting 1820’s radicals to the young people who carry their legacy forward.

This is history brought to life—an experience, a reflection, and a call to action.

Our Intervention

IDEAS was commissioned to develop the Radical Weavers exhibition—conceptualising, designing, and bringing to life an experience capable of telling one of Scotland’s most complex and under-documented stories.

The challenge was immense:

  • Sparse historical material

  • No contemporary first-person accounts from the radicals themselves

  • A narrative requiring both accuracy and emotional resonance

IDEAS responded with a powerful, creative solution:

  • A complete conceptual and visual interpretation of the Radical Rising

  • Atmospheric set design, crafted by hand and built from scratch

  • Interpretive storytelling balancing emotion, historical context, and clarity

  • Exhibition scenes that feel both immersive and deeply human

  • A visual language capable of anchoring a future visitor experience

The final result not only exceeded expectations—it ignited wider ambition, laying the foundation for the Radical Weavers Experience and future expansion of the studio into the futture.

The Outcome

A compelling, emotionally rich exhibition that:

  • Brings the Radical Rising to life

  • Inspires visitors to connect past and present

  • Reinforces Stirling’s place as a centre for weaving heritage

  • Strengthens the charity’s cultural, social, and fundraising impact

Most importantly, it honours the young people at the heart of Radical Weavers—amplifying their voices through design, storytelling, and craft.
