Asset development case study: Dark God Brand
Good design goes beyond aesthetics. At its best, it solves problems, creates opportunities, and gives brands a competitive advantage in the moments that matter most.
When developing brand assets for Dark God, we looked beyond the bottle itself and considered how customers would actually encounter the product in real-world environments. Like many premium spirits, Dark God would often be served from an optic behind a bar, where bottles are typically displayed upside down to allow for efficient pouring and stock control.
This simple but often overlooked reality presented a challenge.
Most spirit labels are designed to be viewed upright on a shelf. Once inverted in an optic, the brand name becomes difficult—or sometimes impossible—to read. In a crowded back bar environment filled with competing products, this can significantly reduce brand visibility at the very moment customers are making purchasing decisions.
Rather than treating the label purely as a visual design exercise, we approached it as a functional brand asset. The solution was deceptively simple: create a label system that remains legible whether the bottle is displayed upright or upside down.
The result is a distinctive identity that works with its environment rather than against it. When displayed in an optic, Dark God remains instantly recognisable and readable, helping the brand maintain visibility in one of its most important points of sale.
While the design solution may appear subtle, its commercial implications are significant. If customers can see and recognise a brand more easily than competing products, they are more likely to remember it, ask for it, and order it. In a category where purchase decisions are often made in seconds, increased visibility can translate directly into increased sales.
The Dark God project serves as a reminder that effective branding isn’t always about making the biggest visual statement. Sometimes it’s about understanding context, anticipating behaviour, and solving practical challenges in ways that create a measurable advantage.
Design with context in mind — because small details can create big wins.
